My colleagues and I spent months wading through thousands of leaked documents and files to reconstruct how China’s censors stage-managed, down to the smallest details, what appeared online about the coronavirus during the outbreak’s earliest stages.

China makes no secret of its belief in rigid internet controls. Less is known about the way the government’s sprawling infrastructure for censorship actually works — the armies of people, the software, the bureaucracy.
