Dear friends,
In 2022, an explorer’s nearly century-old hunch about Alaska’s Ruth Glacier sent a team of scientists off into the windswept mountains with snowmobiles and ground-penetrating radar. They almost didn’t think they’d succeeded in doing what they set out to do, which was find out whether the gorge buried underneath the ice was the deepest in North America. With a bit of luck, and a bit of math, all that changed.

> The ice of Ruth Glacier first gathers in a vast field rimmed by towering granite ridges, the names of which — Moose’s Tooth, Bear’s Tooth, Eye Tooth — give some sense of their sheer, sharp verticality
They're also the namesakes for some of the best restaurants in Anchorage!
